American export controls and market pressure have pushed Chinese AI developers toward open-weight models, cheaper token pricing and domestic chips, reshaping the global AI landscape. Stanford's 2026 AI Index reports a 2.7% performance gap between top US and Chinese models, while Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 opened its model weights and charges $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens versus OpenAI's $5/$30 and Anthropic's $10/$50. Hugging Face said Chinese models made up 41% of model downloads, and Huawei's Ascend chips are gaining ground, prompting commoditization and a move of value toward platforms.
