Officials investigate hantavirus deaths on Atlantic cruise ship
Health officials and the WHO say one hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed on the MV Hondius, with five more suspected cases under investigation after three affected passengers died during a voyage from Argentina toward Cape Verde. One British traveller among the suspected cases is reported to be in intensive care in South Africa. The virus is usually carried by rodents and can spread to people through airborne particles from dried droppings, urine or saliva. The WHO is helping coordinate member states, the ship operator, medical evacuations, a public health risk assessment and support for people still aboard.
