ECB warns euro stablecoin plans could curb bank lending
Bruegel economists presented a paper at an informal EU finance meeting proposing eased liquidity rules and possible access to ECB funding to grow a euro stablecoin market now dominated by dollar-based tokens. Central bankers including ECB president Christine Lagarde warned this could make bank deposits more fickle, speed disintermediation, raise banks' funding costs and curb lending capacity, complicating interest rate control. Finance ministers showed mixed views, while some central bankers rejected turning the ECB into a lender of last resort for stablecoin firms, and the commission is reviewing MiCAR reserve rules.
