Ohio Democrats propose free public university tuition
Ohio representatives Munira Abdullahi and Tristan Rader introduced House Bill 854 to make tuition free for in-state students at all 14 public universities by covering up to eight semesters each. The plan would fund an Ohio Free College Fund through a new tax on individuals, trusts and estates earning more than $500,000 per year, applied only to income above that threshold, with oversight by the Ohio Chancellor of Higher Education. The bill has been referred to the Ohio House Workforce and Higher Education Committee and supporters say it aims to expand access amid rising tuition and heavy student debt burdens.
