Snap, YouTube, and ByteDance settle school addiction lawsuit
Snap, YouTube, and TikTok owner ByteDance agreed to settle a 2024 lawsuit brought by Kentucky's Breathitt County School District that accused platforms of promoting addiction, disrupting learning, and forcing schools to hire extra mental health staff and confiscate devices. An update reports that Meta has now also settled the same case; Breathitt County had sought $60 million but terms were not disclosed. Bloomberg Intelligence estimated comparable suits could create almost $400 billion in theoretical liability, while recent verdicts include a $6 million award to a California woman and a $375 million New Mexico verdict that Meta is appealing.
