China pressures Paraguay over Taiwan ties
Paraguay’s long alliance with Taiwan is under growing pressure as China seeks to reduce Taiwan’s remaining diplomatic partners. Paraguay is the only South American country that still recognizes Taiwan, while 10 countries have switched to Beijing in the past decade. Taiwan has supported Paraguay with loans, donations, scholarships, buses, infrastructure and development projects, including a $200 million housing loan and a $20 million hospital contribution. China is accused of cyberattacks, political pressure and efforts to court lawmakers, while Paraguayan ranchers and agribusiness firms say the Taiwan relationship limits access to China’s larger market.
Paraguay is Taiwan’s only South American diplomatic ally.
