Using Webb's NIRSpec integral field unit, researchers directly measured the mass of a supermassive black hole in Abell2744-QSO1, a Little Red Dot seen 700 million years after the big bang and magnified by cluster Abell 2744. The IFU mapped Keplerian hydrogen gas motion and composition, yielding a black hole mass of roughly 50 million solar masses that constitutes at least two-thirds of QSO1's mass and a metallicity under 0.5% solar. The result supports heavy-seed formation scenarios and validates prior indirect mass estimates, prompting further study of similar objects to test early black hole and galaxy formation models.
