UKHSA urges avoidance of sugary drinks during heatwave
The UK Health Security Agency has warned people to limit fruit juice, smoothies and sugary soft drinks during a May bank holiday heatwave because high sugar can dehydrate the body. The advice says water, diluted squash or lower fat milks are better, and recommends taking refillable bottles and extra water for journeys. Temperatures reached 30.5C on May 23 in Frittenden, Kent, and forecasts say 33C to 34C are possible on May 25, which could break May and bank holiday records. Heat health alerts cover all of England and warn of likely rises in deaths and greater demand on care services.
