Philippine church group launches truth commission on Duterte-era killings
Church leaders and legal figures in the Philippines have launched an independent EJK Truth Commission to document witness accounts and other evidence from Rodrigo Duterte's anti-drugs crackdown so the government can use the material to prosecute law enforcers. The commission, announced by Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David and to be headed by Raul Pangalangan, plans public hearings and said it will allow authorities to use its findings; it may submit periodic reports to justice and human rights officials. Forensic pathologist Raquel Fortun warned verification will be difficult after efforts to evade accountability and altered death certificates.
